Do kids still say things like, “Webster’s Dictionary defines (term) as…” ?
You know, like when they are writing thesis papers? And racking their brains for that last reference to meet the exact minimum required? The old standby was the above…what do they say now?
“Wikipedia clearly states…as of November 15th, i.e. the last time I updated said article personally…”
– or -
“Google provides as number four in results 1 – 10 of about 3,100,000 for fill in the blank. (0.30 seconds)…”
Seriously. Would it be the ultimate red flag if a teacher ran across that phrase in a thesis paper nowadays? “Webster’s Dictionary defines (term) as…”
I know high schools still have dictionaries, because I used a stack of them last summer in a photo shoot…I had a girl sit on them. I thought it was an appropriate use of symbolism. or is that direct expressionism? how did I get here? What am I talking about?
***I’m sorry. I haven’t blogged in a long time. I need to start over.
The title. The definition of sabbatical. right. back on track.
I’m going to be taking a sabbatical. What? I haven’t said that yet?
Wikipedia states, “In recent times, ’sabbatical’ has come to mean any extended absence in the career of an individual in order to achieve something.”
See what I did there? (If you didn’t read the top part, you don’t see what I did there, but don’t go back and read it now. I promise, it’s not worth it.)
So, for the rest of twenty-ten (is that what we are calling it?) I won’t be booking any portrait sessions.
(Other than the ones that I have already booked from last year – you know who you are – lookin’ forward to it.)
Like the Wiki says, I hope to use my time in order to achieve several somethings. I’m really excited about where I think family portrait sessions are headed, and I want to be a part of it – but I need time to experiment. Time to really take some risks and see what happens. Make some mistakes – without the worry of botching a session.
Like that mail-room guy in Elf says, “I gotta get out of the flow.”
In addition, I hope to work on some of my personal-artwork-stuff. Which, as a nice side effect, provides inspiration for the work that I do for you guys. It helps me break down what I’ve been doing, lose the fluff, and start again. start with a clean slate. from scratch. get back to my roots. back to basics. rebuild from the ground…up. anyway.
I will also be taking some time to play house.
I like to play house. and checkers. the chinese kind.
Still, expect to hear from me from time to time between now and January twenty-eleven. I’ll be here posting from the several 2009 sessions that I didn’t blog for this or that reason and from the handful of sessions coming up in the next couple of months. I’ll check in to post some personal stuff as well, or maybe just to ramble about the dinosaur that is the Webster’s dictionary, current MLA formatting, and other such topics that surely interest you since you came to read this photography blog.
If you were hoping to work with me this year (thanks!) and now you are looking for someone in your area / someone that travels to your area that shoots lifestyle portraits, send me an email. I’d love to help you find the perfect photographer for 2010.
See you back here soon!

February 1st, 2010

I have had a wave of emails in the past two weeks that have filled the rest of my 2009 calendar. Circumstances caused me to cut my September sessions by one-quarter, so I am sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.
I have left myself a small amount of wiggle room to work with some regular clients that are not on the calendar yet.
So, although I can not take on any new clients for 2009, if you booked a session with me in fall of 2008 or spring of 2009 and would like to see if I can work you in this fall, please send me an email. I’ve left one spot open in late September, one spot in the third week of October, and I could take one session in November that would not need prints or cards for Christmas.
I didn’t want to just shut down the calendar without giving some kind of heads up to existing clients, so please let me know if you would like to fill one of these spots.
I so appreciate all of your kind words and business – I’m looking forward to working with you all this fall and helping you get ready for the holidays!
Thanks!

no, i haven’t been asleep all this time…but butch has…

here’s the short version…

*** UPDATE: Congrats to the two winners of the wallets (long story) Lindsay and Amy – grandmother to the two kiddos pictured in this post and my big sister, respectively. Lindsay loves the movie, Amy hates it…go figure. Oh – it’s “The Jerk” -Steve Martin at his finest…in my humble opinion…Amy and I can fight about it later…
That’s what I feel like – I want to run outside into the streets shouting – – “The new portfolio is up! The new portfolio is up!”!
I sat down to write this post and within two minutes I had written a novel about my philosophy on creating and maintaining a portfolio and why in the past is has been so hard for me to update it and keep it fresh. Five paragraphs of stuff you might read out of kindness, but probably wouldn’t care anything about.
It’d be like a guy showing me his frame-off restoration of a 1955 Chevrolet Pick-up Truck (there is a red one on Ebay right now…I need it.) I would drool over it and appreciate his hard work, but when he popped the hood and started rattling on about the internal workings he would lose me. I know that’s surely considered some form of auto blasphemy, but that’s my point. I would admire the design, the final product…I just don’t care so much about the process.
So I spared you.
You’re welcome.

The date of Friday, June the 19th in Tuscaloosa is now a definite.
This trip will likely include a stop in Birmingham on the way there or on the way back, so keep that in mind.
So, if you are in the Birmingham / Tuscaloosa area and are interested in booking a session on a “multiple shoot” day to lower the travel cost just shoot me an email and I’ll keep you in the loop of what’s happening when.
Here’s what I have open as of May 11th. *Update 5-29
Saturday June 20th – booked
April 22nd, 2009

UPDATE: Friday, April 3rd it is…things just have a way of working out. Now everyone cross your fingers and toes that the weather plays nice.
All four sessions are booked, but if you / you and a friend were considering a session let me know. I can make another trip to Tuscaloosa in May/June/July and the earlier I know that there is interest – the more time I have to fill more spots, therefore lessening the travel fee for everyone involved.
We could have another day on campus or since it will be warmer we could go to the lake, etc…if you can plan an outing there for fun with your kids, I can shoot portraits. Our options are only limited to the area’s possibilities and your kids interests.
Thanks!

Just wanted to make a quick post to say over the next few days I’ll be not so much REorganizing – as they are not really organized at all, but organizing the sneaky peeks into categories by age. So, if down the road you are like me and can’t even remember what month it was that we did the shoot – if you can remember the general age – then you can quickly find your old posts. Give me a couple of days though before you start wondering what the hay is up with the randomness that will become the category section…as it will take me a bit to sort it all out.

I can shoot senior portraits at any time during the summer before your senior year or the fall of your senior year. I totally understand the idea that you might change between the fall and spring, but unless you plan on shaving your head – honestly the change wont be THAT noticeable.
Other reasons to shoot early: natural sun highlights, that warm summer glow, you just bought new school clothes, you’re still on a natural high from your summer romance, you don’t have senioritis, not yet anyway, and can still actually focus your brain on the task at hand, you don’t already have one foot in the college door and “senior” portraits seem almost irrelevant…stopping.
I specialize in children portraits, do no more than one session in a day (usually), and no more than 12 sessions any given month. Therefore, I wont get the opportunity to shoot a lot of seniors. Knowing this, understand that I will be extra pumped about your session and I’ll do my part to make it really cool.
I’m posting this to give you a loose impression of how the session would go, i.e. 3-4 different “series” of images that make up 30-50 images. It’s more about giving you a good sampling of your life – we’re not just going for that “one” image.
Click here to see the sample senior gallery.
Katie, the only thing we were missing was an old 1950’s pickup…

I’m making a quick post in order to go into more detail about the pricing change, without cluttering up the pricing page any more than I already have.
If you have already booked your session before this post…is posted – you are locked in to the previous pricing. I can also think of two or three people who talked with me about holiday sessions after my schedule was already booked – if those people get in touch with me to book a session officially before June, then I will recognize the previous pricing for those people as well…you know who you are.
For those who will need access to the old pricing, I will be attaching links to your “Your Gallery is Posted” emails. If you need to look it over before then, just send me an email and I’ll get it to you right away.
Thanks so much for your business and support. I’m looking forward to a new year of learning, growing, and playing! Now…i’m getting sick of all this text – let’s see some pictures!

I hope that all of you had a Very Merry Christmas!
I’ve been keeping up with emails over the holidays, but the rest of my work was put on hold while I spent time with family. Thanks so much to those of you that booked a session after the holiday deadlines knowing that you would be extending your wait times.
I will be back to work full time on January 2nd, so if you are expecting a sneak peek or gallery – look for those in the following week. If you are expecting prints or other products, looks for those in the following two weeks.
Let me take this opportunity to point out the new banner in the right hand column – “When do I Book my Session?” Here you will find how many sessions I have available in the coming months. April is currently filling up the fastest with most of these sessions booking in the Tuscaloosa area. So, if you are in Tuscaloosa and considering a spring time session – let me know asap. You’ll want to book in April as well if you want to guarantee splitting the cost of the travel fee with others.
Enjoy your last bit of 2008 tonight and have a Happy New Year!
